Reuse, Re-read, Re-wear
Reuse, Re-read, Re-wear
The Reuse, Re-read, Re-wear project collects and reuses unwanted books and textiles, to sell, redistribute and repurpose for educational and social support activities. The project also creates training and volunteering opportunities for young people and develops education on waste reduction.
Reuse, Re-read, Re-wear collects and takes donations of books and fabric items from the local community. These items are then sorted for sale, reuse, repurposing or recycling by volunteers as part of their work skills development project.
Volunteers are young people who want some work experience and training in a supportive environment with a focus on language development. As well as work experience on the recycling project, volunteers can access an IT course and additional opportunities for developing their language and social interaction skills.
Community involvement includes work with children, families and schools by running 10 workshops, assemblies and events. These will engage children in learning what happens to waste, the impact on the environment and how we can reduce negative impacts. Reusing and repurposing items are a key focus and children, their schools and families, have opportunities to join in with creative activities to reuse donated books and textiles .
Two National Curriculum-linked lesson plans on reusing items that would otherwise be waste are being developed as part of this work.
At least one of our community groups will reuse fabric and/or books to develop art and craft skills and to share cultural knowledge and traditions, reusing textiles to make into new items.
Young people attending our community groups are working on sorting and reviewing donated books to expand the multilingual library, to share with other young people who need books and to create artwork using text and images from books in poorer condition.
